Police are searching for robbers who stole a street sweeper early Monday morning just south of the Stockyards and then wrecked it a few blocks away.
The robbery occurred about 6:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the 14th Street Bar near the intersection of Lake and 14th streets, according to a Coffeyville police report.
Robbery Sgt. Jim Shook said a 33-year-old man had gotten out of the sweeper, to move some debris from the roadway when he was approached by two males.
One of them began to speak to the sweeper operator, who continued to work. Then he was struck from behind, and one of the assailants jumped into the vehicle, Shook said.
The sweeper operator jumped onto the hood to try to stop the robbery. The robber in the truck put it in reverse and hit something, which caused the sweeper operator to hit his head on the windshield. Shook said.
One of the robbers drove off in the vehicle, but the victim didn’t know what happened to the second robber, Shook said.
The street sweeper itself, was later discovered, wrecked a few blocks away in the 1700 block of Pacific Street. The vehicle apparently was disabled when it hit a curb and flipped over onto its side, police said.
The sweeper operator was hospitalized for his head injury but it was not considered life-threatening, police said.
Detectives were still looking for the robbers as of Monday afternoon.
