The search is on for a driver caught on camera causing a multiple-vehicle crash - then fleeing the scene.
A concerned citizen with a camera was passing by when the man behind the wheel was spotted slumped over and stopped in the middle of the road before the wreck.
"He's either drunk or very sick. Something is clearly wrong with him," Renee Weber said.
The apprehensive passerby called 911 after they passed the Dodge pickup truck on the Highway 166 roundabout Sunday afternoon, stopped in a lane of traffic, with the engine running and the man slumped over and drooling.
"He just stopped in the middle of the road blocking traffic," Weber said.
Other drivers noticed the man too.
"Something was not right about him," the witness said.
A Kansas Department of Transportation District 4 worker eventually showed up and tried to wake the man and take his keys.
That's when the two got in a scuffle and with other vehicles in motion, the driver sped off nearly hitting the worker.
Altruistic motorists stayed with the truck as he smashed into two cars causing a chain reaction that resulted in a five car accident.
Michael Conner's new Chevy SS was in the middle of it all.
"It was really scary and I just looked over and made sure my girlfriend was ok," he said.
"Everybody okay over there," the worker asked.
But it wasn't over yet.
Coffeyville police had still not arrived to the scene.
The worker made one more attempt to stop the man. He managed to get the key out of the truck and that's when the driver took off on foot.
Cameras captured him climbing over hay bales and jumping a barbed wire fence.
Police arrived a short time after the driver fled.
"I was afraid he was going to get hit by a car when he got over the fence up there," Weber said.
Police still have not found the driver.
No one was seriously injured in the accident.
